Male Great-tailed Grackle II or Quiscalus mexicanus
Now according to Stokes Field Guide Western Region, these are not supposed to come to California, but according to http://www.whatbird.com they do & are supposed to be here year around. Either way, here they are & this was my first meeting with this species of bird. The male is very vocal & a true show off. ;)
This male was showing off & singing in the tree. I tried to maneuver into a good position for photographing him & he decided I was in the wrong place & moved. Then he was in a very bad position for me. Typical.....
Neither of my shots truly do these birds justice. The males are black but shimmer blue & purple - - just amazing in their coloring.
