Week # 3 - 2009

We have large windows on the house. They seem to reflect far too well the environment. This poor juvenile male Lesser Goldfinch got startled by something & accidentally flew into my sliding kitchen door. I heard a bong & I went to see as I know this happen even though we have put hawk decals on windows & the sliding door to try to eliminate this. I saw some feathers slowly fall to the ground & located the little bird next to the dogs water bowl. I picked him up to check on him. He was dazed & confused. Could not grip my finger - simply put just lay there.

I took him inside the house. Got my daughter to help me & brought out the Pedialyte which is full of electrolytes & a great way to get some strength back into a dog, cat, bird etc should they be ill.

I brought out a syringe & filled it. I fed the little guy who fast realized that this was a good thing. I did not even have to hold on to him. He just lay in my hand.

I managed to shoot this shot by holding the camera in one hand & the little bird in the other. He remained in my hand for probably about 15 minutes & did not try to get away. He drank & relaxed. I put him on a post outside, but he just lay there. I worried one of the dogs would get to him - or one of the cats. Picked him up again. I was ready to try to nurture him for a long time.

But after 15 minutes & some liquid with electrolytes he must have decided he was OK - because suddenly he took off out of my hand & flew into the large tree in our backyard. Landed up high & started singing. I feel sure he's OK now.
