America Goldfinch or Carduelis tristis

This is a winter visitor which I'm seeing for the first time in our backyard. I think this is a male, though originally I thought it was a female. Now I'm not sure. This is for identification only. This bird does not sit down on any branches but flies directly for this feeding sock.
I feel it's even more important this year to feed the birds. There is nothing for them to eat on the mountain. So this is the only way unless we want to lose them completely.
