This is a shot from what now feels like way back when.... It was shot in March of 2007 & I'd just learned about NEF files & RAW. Shot with the D200 + the 300mm f/4

This is a very tiny little bird. It has been identified by my Online friend Larry who knows a lot about birds.

These came for a short time in April of 2007. I shot this manual mode as I seem to recall having the camera on remote as anything I did would set the off & they'd be off flying. I seem to recall leaving the camera on my tripod outside & placed the camera on remote. I then released the remote by a wireless. If they come back, I'll be ready for them. I now have my blind & should be ready to get them when next they come into town. They only come during the here for their Summer range. Can't wait to get them in a more natural setting....

D200 with the 70-200VR with f/2.8 & SB-800 on remote

I'm working on my shots of the Mountain Chickadee. These are new to our backyard from this year as well. So many new birds since I got back to photography.

I believe I have a mated pair of Mountain Chickadees which hang out by my feeders - so fast & rarely sit down for long.

Female Lesser Goldfinch (Western variety) - - I think

So every now & then I kept seeing this tiny little super yellow bird in my backyard. I'd see it once or twice - - then it would be gone. Well I finally broke down & put up a "blind" in my kitchen door & stocked the bird feeder & hopped. Well, today I had luck.
I've tentatively identified this bird as a Female Lesser Goldfinch of Western variety. This is now confirmed. She's a little gal at max 4 1/2 inches (though I'd say this girl's only 4 inches). She & her mate, come by for some food every now & then.

Shot with my cheapo lens the Tamron SP AF Di LD (IF) 200-500mm f/5-6.3 on the D200

Female Lesser Goldfinch (Western variety) 55% crop - - Confirmed

Well, I posted the originals on several boards & the frames got mixed responses. Either people liked them or they found them distracting or plain did not like them. So I promised to post the shots without the frames. Now, I have to admit... pp'ing from one day to the next will not render the exact same result. So I've made new versions of them for those who wish to see.

So, the bird is confirmed a "Lesser Goldfinch" of Western variety. This is the female. It's shot with my cheapo lens the Tamron SP AF Di LD (IF) 200-500mm f/5-6.3 on the D200

Well, today I had luck.
Some of these guys are more pale, others are like this guy - very colorful on the head & chest. Some have little - - but colorful - - others have a lot. This guy is pretty well colored.
Shot with my cheapo lens the Tamron SP AF Di LD (IF) 200-500mm f/5-6.3 on the D200

These little birds freak out every time I open my kitchen door. One would think I'm a hawk or something..... Anyhow, I finally broke down & put up a "blind" in my kitchen door & stocked the bird feeder & hopped.

Male Lesser Goldfinch (Western variety) - - I think

So every now & then I kept seeing this tiny little super yellow bird in my backyard. I'd see it once or twice - - then it would be gone. Well I finally broke down & put up a "blind" in my kitchen door & stocked the bird feeder & hopped. Well, today I had luck.
I've tentatively identified this bird as a Male Lesser Goldfinch of Western variety. This is now confirmed. He's a little guy at max 4 1/2 inches (though I'd say this guy's only 4 inches). He & his mate, come by for some food every now & then.

Shot with my cheapo lens the Tamron SP AF Di LD (IF) 200-500mm f/5-6.3 on the D200

This is the male. It's shot with my cheapo lens the Tamron SP AF Di LD (IF) 200-500mm f/5-6.3 on the D200

Oh I know - - Not all that colorful, but stay together for life & territorial - - and still worthy of some shots. Need confirmation that this is what it is. Tamron seems to focus fast (kind of) on the D300 - - or it's the 300mm f/4 +TC 17E II that's slow to focus - - I don't know. The lighter spot on the tail feathers/back is an OOF (out of focus) Nectarine flower in our Nectarine tree. I will be out to get better shots of this bird as I get a chance.

I'm working on my shots of the Mountain Chickadee. These are new to our backyard from this year as well. So many new birds since I got back to photography.

This little Mountain Chickadee is cleaver enough to have figured out that this upside down umbrella holds water. It's an ant trap to ensure the ants don't invade the hummingbird feeder below. The Chickadees are cleaver enough to drink out of it. The Finches rarely do & the Sparrows do not.

I believe I have a mated pair of Mountain Chickadees which hang out by my feeders - so fast & rarely sit down for long.

I've now & then seen what looks like a gigantic sparrow, but then I found this bird for the first time in our garden & in locating that it's a male Red-winged Blackbird I now realize it's his mate I've seen every now & then. The male gave me an opportunity to photograph him & was rather tolerant in my attempt. It's hard to photograph a black bird with full sun & shadows from the tree & occasional clouds "playing" here & there over it's body......

Common Raven or Corvus corax or is it a Crow

OK, I have asked a lot of people what these are. Everyone except for one online friend says these are Ravens. Then there's Larry. Larry's been birding for I believe 50 years. He stands by the fact that they're a pair of Crows. I'm still in the process of trying to get a final answer, but I know that they're at least 20" long. I also know that we're for years had birds making this sound http://ibc.hbw.com/ibc/phtml/votacio.phtml?idVideo=16083&Corvus_corax in our neighborhood. According to that site the sounds are those of a Raven. This is a common scene with this couple http://ibc.hbw.com/ibc/phtml/votacio.phtml?idVideo=19209&Corvus_corax

So at this point I still don't know. Larry's very sure of his case. Until further notice I'll continue to get a firm measurement of these birds & leave it up to you to decide what you think they are.... Ravens or Crows - - for now, I'm done....

I write probably because I'm not sure.... This is one of two which are obviously a mated pair. They hang out together - - they're rather large (20" +) & seem to think our property is a pretty neat place to hang out.

This is a common scene with this couple http://ibc.hbw.com/ibc/phtml/votacio.phtml?idVideo=19209&Corvus_corax

Soat this point I still don't know. Larry's very sure of his case. Untilfurther notice I'll continue to get a firm measurement of these birds& leave it up to you to decide what you think they are.... Ravensor Crows - - for now, I'm done....

I write probably because I'mnot sure.... This is one of two which are obviously a mated pair. Theyhang out together - - they're rather large (20" +) & seem to thinkour property is a pretty neat place to hang out.

For identification only, to show how tail fans out....

We seem to have a mated couple of the Northern Mockingbird. Now, normally they're in the front yard or near the barn - - not near the feeders in the backyard. Today for the first time, I found them in the large tree by the kitchen...

I'm working on this years set of the Black-headed Grosbeaks. They're here for a short while so it becomes an intense time. They're so skittish........ Last year I worked in MF with a remote release. Very hit & miss. This year I'm trying to work through the makeshift blind I have. But getting them to show up at the right time of the day, in the right spot etc etc is a real pain. I'm trying to get them away from the feeder & that's not easy & get light. These are away from the feeder in natural light.....
